Sound Healing

In the previous blog on Sound Sensitivity I asked myself the following questions: “What can we do to live a flexible, healthy and happy life in a world full of sounds?”. Like I said, I am on a quest myself to move from ‘hating sounds’ to ‘loving sounds’ again. It is my personal challenge to find a way to deal with the constant flow of impulses, sounds and their effects. In this current blog you will read about a healing practice that I tried: Sound Healing.

“How can I move from hating sounds to loving sounds again?”

Loving Sounds

A dear Yoga teacher and friend of mine, Erica Jago told me after having read my newsletter that ‘Hatred of Sounds’ is just such a negative and strong term to use. I couldn’t agree more. Only the doctors and such decided to name the condition that I have that way: Misoponia = Hatred of Sounds. I myself prefer using the term ‘Sound Sensitivity’. Only the main question is: “How can I move from hating sounds to loving sounds again?”

Sound Healing

I therefore decided that perhaps I could heal my condition by using my biggest issue and challenge itself: Sound. Another dear Yoga teacher James Higgins gave me the tip to contact Githa Ben-David and do a sound healing session with her. Since I currently live in Tofo (Mozambique) I quickly organised a healing session with her via Skype. I was thrilled that I managed to book a session with Githa for that same week. I was just so anxious to give Sound Healing a try and I would do almost anything to make this pain go away.

Skype Healing Session

Now I have never been very good with sounds myself and for years I was so shy and quiet that whenever I spoke people couldn’t even hear me. Now during the skype healing session this wonderfully gifted woman in Denmark asked me to make all kinds of sounds coming from my reptile brain. After a few moments into the session we changed the approach. I didn’t seem to be ready for it yet, until a few weeks later when I found myself on the beach. I was on the beach and on my own, there was a strong wind and nobody could hear me, thus I started making the earthy sounds Githa had referred to a week earlier. What a relief to actually be able to make sounds!

Neurological Disorder

To go back to the skype session, during it we worked on formulating my wish: “I’d love to find a way to balance my Sound Sensitivity so that I serve myself, others and the whole”. I believe since it is said to be a neurological disorder that it is going take a while before it is healed. So the wisest step now is to learn how to live with this challenge daily and to see it as strength and not only as a handicap.

Sound Scanning

Before I can heal from Sound Sensitivity, Githa suggested that we should work on the trauma that is stored in my body. She asked me to put the camera of my laptop in front of my throat and in front of my belly to let the sound of her voice resonate with my body: Sound Scanning. Her response was that there is a lot of trauma stored in my body. That shook me up. Now another Yoga teacher that I asked for advice this month also told me that trauma is most probably the cause of my Sound Sensitivity. Now that made me think: “What trauma?”.

Change the story

Githa supported me whilst talking about the trauma that I do remember and that she decided to work on it together with me. She suggested we could change the story of that certain situation. So an incident that happened to me in this life time luckily got a new narrative. Only, she also worked on another trauma of a previous life.

Regression work

Now Sound Healing is pretty new to me and also is regression work. I don’t know whether I believe in previous lives or lives in another dimension, but one thing is sure, even though we worked on serious topics and looked at much old pain; the Sound Healing session was a huge relief. I felt very different afterwards. What were the effects up to now about four weeks after the first session?

Short term effects:

  • It was a relief to actually be allowed to make sounds myself at the beginning of the session.
  • It felt wonderful to hear how her voice responded to my body during the Sound Scanning.
  • It was very surprising and upsetting at the same time to hear what pain was stored in my body.
  • It was even more wonderful to know that we were working on healing this trauma.
  • It helped me knowing that the stories got changed. When I hear sounds now, I say to myself:
“It didn’t happen. We changed the story. I am safe now”.
  • It was intriguing to let Sounds soothe my Sound Sensitivity.

Long term effects:

  • Certain loud and also softer human sounds still trigger me.
  • These sounds still upset me. I still get annoyed, irritated and angry.
  • It still feels like people don’t take into consideration that it feels like they are invading my personal space and the space of my body with their sounds.
  • I am triggered less, but the Sound Sensitivity is still present.

I am now even more curious to what Sound Healing and Sound Scanning can do for me when I am in the room with Githa. I find regression work, trauma and alternative healing treatments fascinating and necessary at the same time and I would love to travel to Denmark to meet her in person. The thought that not all sounds are painful and that certain sounds can actually make me less sensitive to sounds that trigger and upset me, is such a huge relief. Only like I said, I am still triggered and the Sound Sensitivity is still present, but is definitely less severe.

In the following months I will keep you posted on holistic and alternative cures that I will have tried and I will tell you what I think of it. I will keep you posted on this quest and then you can decide for yourself which ones you’d like to try as well.

Sound Sensitivity

What can we do to live a flexible, healthy and happy life in a world full of sounds? I am on a quest myself to move from ‘hating sounds’ to ‘loving sounds’ again. It is my personal challenge to find a way to deal with the constant flow of impulses, sounds and their effects. Yoga of course is one of those tools.

Personal journey

I will share my experiences with you via my Sound Sensitivity blogs so you can benefit from it too. It will be an honest, vulnerable and courageous report of my personal journey to loving sounds, myself and daily life again. In these blogs I am going to share with you what I believe are tools we can use to live in a world full of sounds, but be less influenced by them.

Impulses and sounds

I find that there is a constant flow of impulses and sounds and all of it troubles me constantly. Also, the list of sounds that trigger me and send me into a complete fury is endless. I know too that I have found sounds challenging from a very young age and sounds have always troubled me. Also the older I get, the worse it gets and therefore I know I need to take serious steps NOW before I truly start disliking all sounds in the world. I’d would really like to love all sounds again. What about you?

Hatred of Sounds

Now, some of us are ‘just’ sensitive to sounds and some of us, like me, are extremely (!) sensitive to sounds. This condition and challenge is called ‘Misophonia’, which means as much as ‘Hatred of Sounds’. Why are some so sensitive to sounds? Well, I will tell you all about it in my blogs. I will also guide you through all kinds of methods that I have tried and tested. I recently followed intensive therapy, private as well as in a group, and we looked at this challenging condition in great depth and still do. I thus decided I can share this knowdledge with you via my already existing platform on Yoga, Personal Development and Growth.

Loving sounds

I am on this challenge, because I’d like to move from hatred to love, and from hating sounds to loving sounds again. I just hope that I don’t have to feel and behave like a Miss. O. Phonia much longer and that I can enjoy being me 24/7. I wish I can live a carefree life and feel safe and that I can live a flexible, healthy and happy life in a world full of sounds. I wish the same for you.

Peace and quiet

When you are easily overwhelmed by sounds just like me, I believe it is important to take serious steps. You need to adapt your life so that you, more than others, can sooth your easily overwhelmed body, mind and heart daily. Why? Even though we would love others to adapt to our values, believes and standards, they will not. Believe me, I have tried. The whole neighbourhood knows me and whenever I moved to a new place, they got to know me pretty soon as well. I have moved around a lot and changed my situation many times in order to find some peace and quiet.

Flexible, Healthy, Happy

Only impulses and sounds are everywhere and in case you are also struggling with your ‘hatred of sounds’ (Misophonia) just like me, remember: the condition is part of you, just as well it is part of me. So before you too start changing everything around you, just like I have done many times in my life so far, let us look at the following question: “What can we do to live a flexible, healthy and happy life in a world full of impulses and sounds?”.

Natural Cure for Misophonia

Now I do hope that one day the topic will be researched enough and that a proper treatment will exist. For now, it is all one big experiment and I thus I decided to also start my own. I am also making you part of that journey by sharing it with you. I do hope that I can find a natural cure for Misophonia and for now I will do my best to apply the wisdom of Yoga to ease the symptoms of constantly being overwhelmed by all impulses and sounds around me.

In the following months I will keep you posted on holistic and alternative cures that I will have tried and I will tell you what I think of it. I will keep you posted on this quest and then you can decide for yourself which ones you’d like to try as well.

This is the first blog out of many on finding a natural cure for sound sensitivity.

Can Yoga heal us?

Can Yoga heal us? Nowadays Yoga seems to be the remedy for almost everything. Being a Yoga teacher myself, I am starting to reflect on it more and more. Sometimes I have the feeling that the Yoga that we practice in the West is more like a sport, than an actual healing practice. But is this really true? Let’s explore this topic a little more. The main questions that I’d to answer are:

Asana practice

The Yoga classes that I teach and attend are mainly focused on doing physical exercises. I believe that Yoga is a practice that entails more than the asana practice that we do: the practice of physical postures. The psychical exercises are meant to strengthen the physical body and to prepare our body for those moments of sitting still whilst doing a breathing exercise and/or a meditation. I find that the Yoga classes in the West often focus on the physical practice and not on the other healing parts of the practice of Yoga. Now why is that?

Yoga Traditions

I went looking for some answers and I came across the book ‘Yoga Body’ from Mark Singleton and his article on the history of Yoga on Yogajournal.com. It made clear to me that the Yoga that we practice today only has a minor link to the Yoga that was practiced in India. I think we would like it to have a direct link to the Yoga traditions in India, only in reality it is all less exotic as we would like it to be perhaps. What I understood from Singleton’s article? The Yoga practice that we do in the West is strongly linked to the fitness culture that already existed in the West and it is a combination of the Yoga that existed in India and the gymnastics that we already practiced in the West. Now how ‘bad’ is that?

Yoga is an experimental practice!’,
James Higgins.

Healthy body

The Yoga that we do in the West makes our bodies leaner, fitter and stronger and that is perfectly OK. Now the question of course is, does it bring us more than a healthy body? Can it also, like I state on my home page, aid us in getting a healthier frame of mind and a happier heart? James Higgins, one of my favourite Yoga teachers once said: ‘Yoga is an experimental practice!’. And I know by experience that Yoga has supported me a great deal. After almost each practice I feel thé Yoga glow. That is also why I choose to continue practicing, but I find that it only has a long lasting effect on me when I practice almost daily for at least 30 minutes.

Yoga works

How does Yoga work exactly? Now our bodies are incredibly complicated and miraculous at the same time and it takes a lifetime to fully understand it, at least that is what I believe. Therefore out of personal interest and for my work as a Yoga teacher, I keep on studying and learning about the effects of Yoga. I know Yoga works, but I believe everybody should experiment for themselves. The way I see it; Yoga once started as one big experiment. The practice as we know it today and the way we apply the tool of Yoga, keeps evolving too, just like we do ourselves. Let our practice therefore evolve with us and let us adapt our practice to our needs.

Can Yoga heal us?

What do you think?

  • Can Yoga heal you?
  • Can Yoga Yoga calm you down?
  • Can Yoga sooth your overstressed body, mind and heart?
  • Can Yoga heal you from daily impulses, sounds and their effects?
  • Can Yoga be a Natural Cure for Sound Sensitivity?

I know Yoga keeps me sane. I can already share with you that taking the time to go for long early morning walks and doing long Yin Yoga practices help me enormously with soothing my often tense and overwhelmed body, mind and heart. Let’s find out what we can do to let ‘Yoga’ heal us and our overwhelmed systems!

Keep on flowing

This is the last blog out of 12 blogs on Personal Growth. We started with You are here now and finished with Plan your dream life. This blog is to further guide you on that journey.

Rock your world

Once you start taking action, you would love to make sure you keep liking the adventure you started. This blog is all about how you can keep on flowing whilst realising you dreams and wishes. Like we love saying: ‘Hey, it is time to rock your world!’ and that of others too ;).

Realising your dream

You are already working on realising your dream and it started as soon as, or even before, you started reading our blogs. What is important here too is the reason why you went on this journey. It is also about matching your actions with your core values and beliefs and making things work for YOU. Let this last blog guide you on your journey too by measuring the progress whilst having already started to live your dream. Enjoy!

Stay on track

It is time to get started and to keep on flowing. We advise you to get into the work-mode and rest from time to time like we said in Plan your dream life, but also make sure you stay on track, okay? Just follow the tips below and have fun whilst finding your way.

Visualise your dream

Perhaps one of the first and most important tips we can give you is to visualise your dream life as often as possible. How? Pretend it is already happening:

  • Can you see it?
  • Can you hear it?
  • Can you feel it?
  • Can you touch it?
  • Can you taste it?
  • Can you notice it with all of your senses?
  • Can you believe it?
  • You are already DOING it.

Measure the progress

Now once having visualised it and having experienced it like is already happening, the tips below can also help you to stay on track to keep on flowing and to keep on working towards realising it.

  • Get a great, gorgeous note book and write your dream and (sub)goal(s) in it.
  • Keep writing in your Gift of life book and keep track of Gratitude, Successes and Wishes.
  • Keep track of your TOPS. Write these down daily if possible, but at least weekly:  What did you accomplish? Finished? Managed to do it? So write down all that you finished and what went well.
  • Keep track of your TIPS. Write down things you have learnt about yourself. This is your book with survival tips. The book of TIPS tells you what works for you and what doesn’t. It is about what you have learnt while being on your journey through life and it is all about getting to know yourself even better.
  • Keep track of your daily/ weekly WISHES. While working towards your goal(s), other wishes can come on your path. Write them down. Park them. Look back at them from time to time. The ones that are important will stay at the back of your mind and you can then find a way to fulfil those wishes too. You now know how.
  • Write down: ‘In [#] years from now….’. and answer the following questions:
    • I live in …
    • I am busy with …
    • I feel …
    • I am surrounded by …
    • My lifestyle consists of …
    • I submerge myself in …
    • My world includes …
    • I am grateful for …

Present tense? YES, like it is true already!

Tip

Choose what works for you. Perhaps you want to try the suggestions above; perhaps you choose only one or none. At least do the next exercise: look at what goes well to stay motivated and to make your dream come true. No matter what happens on your path and what might temporarily slow you down. With determination, perseverance and motivation you will get there. I know that from experience, even if you move slowly, you will move and grow, blossom and shine!

Living your dream

Now how can you keep on living your dream? By already living your dream daily. Remember that everything began with the phrase ‘I would love to, but. . .’. Now you can say: ‘I am working towards … and I am taking steps to make it come true’. Why? ‘Just because!’.

Retain that magic

There is no need to defend your choice. This is what you want to accomplish and that’s enough. You don’t need to defend or justify your wishes and longings. They are yours. If you know them, you can share them, but you don’t have to. It is like when you know you deeply love somebody. You just know it. As soon as you put in down in words, it seems to lose its magic.

So retain that magic and work on moving towards living your dream so you can reach your full potential. Like they say in Yoga: move from Dukha (Suffering) to Sukha (more neutral grounds) on to reaching your full potential. That IS what we are all destined to do!

Just some good tips to keep that magic going!

  • Stay connected!

To keep feeling connected with what is in YOU, keep on reading through all of your answers that you hopefully noted down in your notebook.

  • Believe!

Surround yourself with images and words that help you manifest your dream and perhaps say some positive words out loud too, such as: ‘This is possible and I am working on it’.

  • Say Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Be grateful for what is already there and be grateful for all the things on your path while moving forward! So write in your ‘Gratitude Journal’ daily if you can or at least weekly!

  • Submerge!

Read & talk about your goal(s) and tell the right people about what it is that you love doing and are working on. Perhaps there is somebody out there that can support you.

  • Take action!

If you feel inspired, take action. No matter how big or small the task, but use your inspiration and when you feel an impulse and have ideas, do something with it. These are little signs from your soul, so it’s time to start listening and taking action. If you feel joy, you know you are on your path and found your Dharma!

  • Experience it now!

Try meditating daily or weekly on your goal and your steps towards it and visualise it too. What do you feel in your physical-, energetic-, emotional-, mind- and environmental body? So focus on the feeling of having accomplished your goal or steps to it already. This will help you in attracting what you would like to succeed in.

  • Stay positive!

If you feel negative, frustrated or down, then very consciously try to change it to a more positive state. So move to a feeling of being able to cope and deal with the challenges and position yourself into a state in which you can tell yourself: ‘I can do this!’. You can do this by focusing on things, people, places and so on that you like!

  • Acknowledge that it works!

If something turns out well and works for you, acknowledge it! The more you do this and see the positive signs that the Universe is helping you and things are falling into place, acknowledge it, be grateful and dare to see it. You will see your thoughts, emotions and attitude reflected in what happens around you, so better make it positive ones.

The grand finale. One last thing. You started working towards your goal. For now, go, move, flow and feel free, be happy and be grateful that it is in your power to fulfil your dreams. Go out, do it. Live your dream life and celebrate every step along the way.

When looking in the mirror do affirm to yourself: ‘Hey, it is time to rock MY world!’

Spiritual Power

How to move from powerless to powerful and on how to (re-)connect to our Soul? A question I have given possible solutions to in Soul Care and Soul Power. Sitting still, meditating and reconnecting to our spiritual qualities are ways of taking care of our Soul and reconnecting to it. Now we found out what our seven spiritual qualities are, but what are the seven spiritual powers that we can use to feel more powerful? Let’s look at Spiritual Power.

Just happy

Like I said before in the blog on Soul Power: ‘It is about taking care of our soul (Soul Care) to feel the power of our soul (Soul Power). We thus need the non-doing to focus on the house of our soul (third eye) to reconnect to the seven spiritual qualities that our soul is made of and to feel that bliss is part of us’.  Bliss can be seen as ‘Just happy!’. We have those moment right, when we are just happy. They might be rare and these blissful moments only come to us occasionally, but they do happen. When was the last time you were just happy?

“Bliss can be seen as ‘Just happy!’’… “

Blissful

The chances are big that it didn’t have to do with status, wealth or having/gaining power over something or someone. Think back. What made you feel blissful the last time you felt it? Did you feel at peace? Did you feel loved? Did you feel strong? Did the moment feel pure? Did you feel lucky? Did you just know what the right thing to do was? Did you trust your intuition? Great, I am sure that when you are really honest the answer here is ‘YES’. Good news, because this meant that when you felt blissful, that you reconnected to one of your seven spiritual qualities, thus the qualities of your soul. We need that connection to feel our spiritual power.

  1. Peace
  2. Love
  3. Strength (power)
  4. Purity
  5. Bliss (Luck)
  6. Knowledge
  7. Wisdom

Soul

Thus to recap on the topic ‘Soul’ before we move on to the topic of ‘Spiritual Power‘. This is what I have understood from the teachers and students at the workshops that I have attended at Brahma Kumaris Spiritual Academy Amsterdam:

  • We all have a physical body.
  • In this body ‘lives’ a spiritual body.
  • This spiritual body is referred to as our soul.
  • The house of the soul in our body is our ‘third eye’; the space in between the eyebrows.

Dimensions of the soul

What are the thee dimensions of the soul?

  • Our soul has three dimensions: mind, intellect and experiences (Samskaras).
  • These dimensions of our soul stay with us when the body dies.
  • Our experiences are taken with us to next lives.
  • This energy can be felt in each life that we live.
  • This energy is referred to as Karma.
  • Karma refers to past actions and deeds that have an influence on our current live and next lives.

Universal soul

Are we part of a Universal soul? Yes:

  • We all have a soul.
  • Our soul is part of a greater universal soul.
  • Our soul has seven spiritual qualities (soul qualities).
  • These spiritual qualities are present in all of us.

Reconnect

How can we reconnect to our soul and feel our spiritual power?

  • We can reconnect to the greater universal soul by reconnecting to these seven spiritual qualities.
  • We can reconnect to it becoming aware of them again.
  • We become aware of them through our senses.
  • We can become aware of them again through for example Yoga and meditation.
  • When we recognise these spiritual qualities and would like to work with them, we can use our spiritual powers.

Clean your karma

Clean your Karma and feel whole again:

  • We do this so that we can reconnect to the greater universal soul that we are all part of.
  • We can them clean our karma, meaning we redirect our actions and deeds for a better future.
  • When we reconnect to our spiritual qualities we feel one with the universe.
  • We can then feel connected, at peace and whole again.
  • We can then feel bliss.

Find the silence

Ah ha there we are, so what are these spiritual powers? How do we get to use them in order to feel connected, at peace and whole again? How to feel blissful? First find the silence within you to have a closer and honest look before you decide on what to do or not to do.

First we need to take a distance. Whatever happens, whatever is being felt, look at it as neutral as you can. Try not to judge it. Look at it. What is it that wants to be noticed, seen, heard, felt? What does it want to make clear?

Secondly accept it! It is there clearly and pushing it away or running away from it won’t work. It will come back like a boomerang, believe me. So then the next thing we do is to sit with it, like they call in therapy: ‘sit in the fire’. Feel empathy for it.

Steps to spiritual power

Thus what do we do first? We find the silence within us by taking the following steps towards more spiritual power:

  • We take a distance
  • We observe
  • We acknowledge
  • We accept it
  • We empathize with it
  • We sit in silence
  • We deal with it

Spiritual powers

Okay and then now what? Right we call in our spiritual powers to decide on how to deal with it:

Power of / to …

  1. introversion: Sit in silence and wait. Think about a turtle, go slow. Hide from time to time.
  2. pack up: Know when to stop. What is really necessary? What is not?
  3. tolerate: Be honest and accept what needs to be accepted.
  4. adapt: Reinvent yourself.
  5. distinguish: Use your intellect, your intuition here. What is really happening?
  6. consider: What is of real value? What can you do?
  7. recognize: See what is truly happening. Be honest and admit it.
  8. take action: Take action, trust life and let go.

To sum up it is all about finding the silence within us to have a closer, more honest look at ourselves. It is about using our spiritual powers to decide what needs to be done, when and by whom. And when we apply one of these powers we do it with the strength of our spiritual qualities to create new positive experiences that contribute to our karma.

Finally like the teachers that were guiding us at the Academy that Sunday told us: ‘We at a certain point of our life got introduced to Raja Yoga. We were students at the time and even though we are now guiding you today, we still are students’. It is also the concept of their Academy: ‘teach and guide each other’. I like that thought, and that is what I tried to do here as well. Sharing with you what has been shared with me!

Soul Power

How to move from powerless to powerful and on how to (re-)connect to our Soul? That is what we talked about in the blog on ‘Soul Care’. Let’s recap on the ‘how’. We can take care of our soul and become powerful by re-connecting to our spiritual qualities and apply these in life. How? Yes, right. Let’s have a closer look on how to feel powerful. Thus let’s look at Soul Power.

Qualities of our soul

They say we can do a daily Raja Yoga meditation to start feeling the energy of the qualities of our soul. What are these seven spiritual qualities again?

  1. Peace
  2. Love
  3. Strength (power)
  4. Purity
  5. Bliss (Luck)
  6. Knowledge
  7. Wisdom

Now how do these spiritual qualities feel? We already know the difference, because for example: ‘How do you feel when you are at peace?’ and ‘How do you feel when you are not at peace, but when you are upset?’. But also important is: ‘How do we move from Soul Care to Soul Power?‘. When we know our spiritual qualities, how can we use their power? Thus… how can we use their strength?

House of the soul

The first step is, as I was told, to start meditating and focussing on these qualities. It is about doing our daily Raja Yoga Meditation and focussing on the third eye, which is the house of the soul.

As Brahma Kumaris Spiritual Academy in Amsterdam told us during the workshop: ‘The Soul resides in the body. It can be found in the space between the eyebrows, close to the pineal gland. It is often referred to as the third eye, the eye of insight’. As they explained: ‘When you focus on the third eye, on your soul and its spiritual qualities, you will be able to connect to these qualities more and more’.

Thus paying attention to these qualities is the way to open up our third eye. It will give us a bigger scope and more understanding. It will give us more insight and more clarity. Clear? Read on, perhaps my practical tip will help us out!

Non-doing

Now what does this mean exactly? The way I understood it is that when we meditate, and when we sit still and when we focus on these qualities, we start to observe more. I know we are all very used to doing stuff, but I believe the non-doing (observing) is the most important aspect for getting more insight.

‘I am at peace, I am Love, I am Strong (Strength (power)),

I am Pure, I am Bliss (Luck), I am Knowledgeable, I am Wise’.

Mantra

Now how do I focus on these spiritual qualities? I say them repeatedly whenever I need to. I have turned them into a mantra that I also use during meditation: ‘I am at peace, I am Love, I am Strong (Strength (power)), I am Pure, I am Bliss (Luck), I am Knowledgeable, I am Wise’.  You can of course choose just one of these qualities for your mantra or you could make your own sentence. Keep repeating it whenever you need. Whether you are meditating or sitting on the bus, use it.

Negative mind trip

I repeat it especially when I feel my mind takes me on a negative mind trip. This is my way to counterbalance the negativity that I feel coming up to surface. By repeating this mantra, I leave no space for its negativity. It is kind of like saying: ‘NO more!’. I give my mind a new and more positive task by repeating the spiritual qualities or just one of them like: ‘I am at peace!’.  This is how I train myself to remember those spiritual qualities.

Soul conscious

It is said that these spiritual qualities of our soul come from a world that is made of pure energy and that it is only soul conscious. We as humans have that quality and we are also aware of the fact that we live in a body. You could say that our soul communicates with us via our senses.

Now by becoming of aware of what is being felt in the body, we can learn to observe what is behind a certain sensation or feeling. That is why meditating and sitting still to observe what is happening is so important. If we always keep running, how can we then notice what is really going on? We need to stop and stand still from time to time to be able to feel where when and where and to whom we need to say: ‘NO more!’.

Burn out

So many of us get a burn out. You could also say: ‘burn-down’, because we stop feeding the light of our soul. We lose track, because we only take care of our 1000-things-to-do list. The fire of our soul burns down. Our body for sure has given us signals, but when we ignore them and decide not to listen, we ignore our very own soul that gives us our strength and power. It is about taking responsibility for whom we are and what we do and why we do it. It is about taking care of ourselves and reconnecting to our soul. It is about being aware of our body and of what is being felt in the body. It is also about recognising the messages of our soul through the body.

Bliss

It is about taking care of our soul (Soul Care) to feel the power of our soul (Soul Power). We thus need the non-doing to focus on the house of our soul (third eye) to reconnect to the spiritual qualities that our soul is made of and to feel that bliss is part of us.

Bliss can be felt as ‘Just happy!’. It happens when we reconnect to our spiritual qualities and when we realise those qualities are part of us. We all have them. It is a matter of choice on how to use them and on how to (re-)connect to them. It is the intention behind our actions that has an influence on our future. It is our choices in the here and now that affect our near-future. Now what can you do today to reconnect to the powerful spiritual qualities that already are part of you?

And finally…

Like the teachers that were guiding us at the Academy that Sunday told us: ‘We at a certain point of our life got introduced to Raja Yoga. We were students at the time and even though we are now guiding you today, we still are students’. It is also the concept of their Academy: ‘teach and guide each other’. I like that thought, and that is what I tried to do here as well. Sharing with you what has been shared with me!

This blog: Soul Care.
This is the first out of three blogs on the soul.

Soul care

Soul Care, as I wanted to type this, ‘Soul Rare’, first come down on paper. Funny, because it is actually rare to come across the workshop I went to. I attended a not so common workshop on how to take care of our Soul. A workshop on how to move from powerless to powerful and on how to (re-)connect to our Soul.

Now why did I go to this seminar? I was curious what the Brahma Kumaris Spiritual Academy in Amsterdam (BKSA) could teach me about the Soul. Questions I had, even though they often talk about the Soul in all of the Yoga books I have read, were: ‘Do we have a Soul?’ and “If the answer is ‘yes’, where can we find this Soul?” and ‘What does it do for us?’.

Soul

Now if we were to have a Soul, where can it be found? And how can we take care of our soul? As BKSA told us: ‘The Soul resides in the body. It can be found in the space between the eyebrows, close to the pineal gland and it is the spot that is often referred to as the third eye. Furthermore it is our connection to the higher source out there’.

As they told us, this higher Soul is infinite and can’t be found in the physical world that we know. It is outside of our physical body and outside our subtle body too. I learned that our Soul can be seen as energy. I once heard somebody say: inspired means ‘In-spirit’, which again comes down to connecting to your spirit, thus our Soul energy. This is the way I like looking at it.

House of the Universal Soul

I find it hard to imagine though where the house of the Universal Soul is. I just imagine it is the Universe itself, the space outside our hemisphere. A place so vast that it is almost impossible to understand greatness of it. And it is hard to understand all of this.

It is just like I wrote in one of my others blogs, perhaps we are just here and there isn’t a greater source out there. Perhaps we are all here by coincidence and trying to make the best of it. But then again these ladies at the workshop sounded so sincere and convinced and they were so quiet, so serene and so at peace with life, that I was willing to stay for the entire three hours and listen.

Spiritual Qualities

They told us that all the spiritual qualities that we need in life are already present in us. We are one with them and with the greater source, only we need to reconnect to it again and again through meditation. As I understood it, this is what Raja Yoga means: it is about connecting to the higher consciousness. They also state that the Soul that never incarnates.

Now what spiritual qualities were they talking about?

Our seven spiritual qualities are:

  1. Peace
  2. Love
  3. Strength (power)
  4. Purity
  5. Bliss (Luck)
  6. Knowledge
  7. Wisdom

Soul qualities

They call these spiritual qualities also our ‘Soul qualities’ and these can also be seen as pure, bright and powerful energies. The energy can be felt through our senses and makes us aware of our Soul and its seven qualities. We were told that we have to move from a more physical awareness to a more spiritual awareness, meaning that we learn to distinguish what is happening in our physical body and what is happening at a more spiritual level.

An example that was given is that we are not our body and that we should not identify with it. We are our spiritual qualities, because these go with us when our Soul leaves our present body. Now interesting question: when we die, what parts of our Soul leave the body and stay together so to speak?

Aspects of our Soul

In case we take care of our soul, it is interesting to look at the three dimensions of our Soul. Our Soul is made of three aspects:

  1. Mind
  2. Intellect
  3. Experiences (Samskaras).

Firstly, mind can be translated as all that our body knows, and that is the knowledge of our physical, energetic, emotional, mental and spiritual body.

Secondly, intellect is a deeper knowing and is linked to our intuition. I believe it is our inner wisdom.

Thirdly, samskaras always reminds me of the word ‘scares’, so the scares of our lives. What it comes down to is all of the experiences we have had in our lives. So not only this life, but other lives as well. It shapes our personality and character.

Soul care

So here we are right; we have been given a physical body, we have our Soul and we might have all kinds of thoughts raging through our head and all kinds of decisions to make? What do we do with it? Thus how can we take care of our Soul and live life?

Soul Care = connecting to our spiritual qualities and apply these in life.

But where to begin? Start with a daily Raja Yoga meditation to start feeling the energy of the qualities of your soul: Peace, Love, Strength (power), Purity, Bliss (Luck), Knowledge and Wisdom. How do these feel? We already know the difference, because for example: ‘How do you feel when you are at peace?’ and ‘How do you feel when you are not and you are angry?’. Clear enough right!

Raja Yoga

In Raja Yoga they meditate with the eyes open to feel the connection to the Soul and to feel the connection to everything and everybody around them and to re-connect to that ever-present infinite Soul. Whilst meditating we can re-connect to our spiritual qualities. We can feel the energy of these qualities in us and remind ourselves that we have all have these qualities inside of us. Whenever we need to make a decision, we can choose our response.

Meditate with the eyes open

Furthermore, why meditate with the eyes open? Yes, because life is lived with the eyes open. We want to feel the connection to our Soul and the Universal Soul at all times, especially when we are awake. It is about living our life and being aware of our seven spiritual qualities that our Soul (mind, intellect and Samskaras) is made of.

Yoga coaching

A Yogi friend of mine told me she had suggested me to her friends for some Yoga Coaching Sessions. Now I don’t like the name ‘coach’ myself, but hey, it is what I do. Also the name ‘Yoga Coach’ does clarifies what I do: I combine Yoga and Coaching and whatever other tools I love in search for answers to life’s questions and challenges. Only I think I’d rather have another Job title.

Yoga Coach

Now, I am not a psychologist nor a registered coach, but I love changing things for the better and perhaps I can guide you forward on your path too. I love change and I sometimes look for it in order to feel alive. So perhaps instead of calling myself a ‘Yoga Coach’ it should be ‘Change Coach’.

  • If you happen to know a great job title that I have not thought of contact me.
  • If you feel like changing things in your life for the better, e-mail me too: info@yinyogawithmarianne.com.

Receiving guidance

I have worked as a tutor, mentor, teacher and instructor since 2005 and life has given me enough experiences and insights too. Also, I have attended intensive private- and group coaching and therapy sessions myself, so I know what it feels like to be receiving guidance.

Just one thing a day

I furthermore have a background in Communication, Journalism, Teaching English to Adults and Younger Learners and I have followed about 1000 hours of Yoga Teacher Trainings. What did I learn from all of this? You can lead the dream life you wish to lead. You need to have a vision and a plan and you do one thing a day to achieve your goals. Just one thing a day!
